So you want to buy a pedigree puppy? |
|
Please note that the Irish Kennel Club is the ONLY national registry recognised by the other professional kennel clubs worldwide such as the UK Kennel Club, the American Kennel Club etc. Your puppy must be registered with the Irish Kennel Club.
Following these guidelines will help you source and take home a healthy, happy puppy. We are always more than happy to help you source a puppy and give advice regarding temperament etc. If you have never owned a dog before please contact us for free advice on how to source a puppy and what to expect. Preparation is key and will make your life and your puppy’s life a lot easier! You have decided on the breed you would like to adopt Once you have decided on breed contact the Irish Kennel Club Breed Secretary straight away. A listing of club secretaries is available from the Irish Kennel Club website www.ikc.ie. If there is no Irish breed secretary listed then contact the UK kennel club and speak with an accredited breeder. You will find a listing here www.thekennelclub.org.uk The UK Kennel Club are the UK equivalent to the Irish Kennel Club. Guidelines Print these pointers take them with you when sourcing or viewing puppies.
Health Your puppy should be the right weight, free from fleas, worms, ticks or parasites. He/she should be health warranted with the appropriate tests done and vaccinated with supporting veterinary documentation. Check what health checks are required for the specific breeds for example cardio tests for cavaliers, hip scoring for Labradors. Insurance Take out pet insurance as soon as you purchase your puppy. This will cover costs associated with vet fees or should your puppy be involved in a third party accident. Pedigree dogs available from rescue See www.irishanimals.ie/breedrescue.html. This is not an opportunity to get a free puppy or dog. Although the initial financial outlay may be considerably less you will be expected to donate towards the vaccinations or if the dog has already been spayed/neutered. A good idea is to foster before adoption that way you will really know if you are ready for a puppy or dog. |
